MediaFutures – Data-driven innovation hub for the media value chain – 1ST OPEN CALL

MediaFutures, Data-driven innovation hub for the media value chain, is a European project funded by the European Commission under the European Union´s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. MediaFutures will create a transnational European data innovation hub that will bring together Startups, SMEs and Artists in the media value chain to deliver a programme that expands on standard models to come up with novel, unconventional ways for people to engage with quality journalism, science education and democratic processes. The final aim is the creation of products, services and digital artworks and experiences that will reshape the media value chain through innovative, inclusive and participatory applications of data and user-generated content.

MediaFutures  is looking for promising startups, SMEs and artists to take part in the project FIRST round of acceleration and residencies programme. The programme takes startups through 3 phases of technical and business growth (START, BUILD and EXHIBIT) over 6 months, with a combination of online sessions and physical meetings , if the Covid-19 situation allows it. The selected applicants can get up to 80k€.equity-free funding.

How does it work?

Interested startups, SMEs and artists will solve a challenge during the acceleration and residencies programme. The open call allows 3 types of application tracks:

  • Startups for Citizens (SfC): Standalone startups/SMEs building a product or service that encourages novel, more meaningful ways to engage with content. We seek to fund new approaches to media and online content that ensure diversity, transparency, accountability and accuracy. The focus will be on areas of public interest: journalism, including bottom-up forms, science education, and digital democracy. Startups in this track will be funded with up to €65,000.
  • Startup meets Artist (SmA): Teams consisting of a startup and an individual artist or artistic company collaboratively developing a new concept of data technology and the arts. Companies will build a product in collaboration with artists in residency. Submissions should aim to lead to new experiences to make data exploration both entertaining and informative, building upon products, services, and tech used or developed by the startup. Funded with up to €80,000 per startup and €40,000 per artist.
  • Artists for Media (AfM): Standalone artists or artistic companies proposing an innovative artwork concept and production process. Submissions should propose new ideas and experiences in visual and performance arts that critically and materially explore data and technology to question and comment on its impact on individuals and society. The focus will be on data relevant to the media value chain, including social media. Artists are funded with up to €30,000.
